I got one about 2 years ago, called the DW09, generic as profanity , same frame as one I got for 10 bucks a few months before that too. It has 3G for calls and texts yes, you can actually send messages on it, surprisingly responsive screen , a 2MP camera, decent enough speaker, Bluetooth, WiFi, and access to the full Google Play Store running a version of Android 4. I had San Andreas running on it fine.

I mean, shit to control, but it ran it fine. Half a gig of RAM is more than enough for a watch after all. Only downside is there was no Micro SD port. So many better options out there.

Edit: Sorry, I meant QW DZ09 is a lot cheaper, doesn't run Android, and only does 2G. Still a fun toy, but as far as a comparable product to the deal is concerned, it is not. The QW09 on the other hand, is perfectly comparable for a fraction of the price. Well, unfortunately a few months ago it fell out of the car and got run over, doesn't work so good these days. Buuuut before that it was great.

Calls were nice and clear, apps worked fine only thing I used a lot though was Messenger, to send photos I'd take on it off. I used the camera a lot back when I was doing placement at a kinder for my diploma course, we'd have to take a lot of photos of the kids during the activities and stuff we set up for them, and every time you go to get the centre's iPad they would lose interest or pull a face or go hide or whatever, but sneaking a quick pic with the camera on here was a life saver honestly.

Battery wise if you're just leaving it be all day, you'll get a good day's use out of it. If you wanna play an intensive game like the aforementioned Grand Theft Auto, expect half an hour and bring a charger with you. I was mourning the loss of simple family pleasures like leisurely mealtimes, reading the Sunday papers in bed, playing board games - and hell, just making eye contact.

And then there was the stew of hormones - mine menopausal and theirs adolescent. Desperate times, I remember thinking incoherently at the time, call for desperate measures. A lot has changed in the ten years since I switched off my iPhone the original and hauled our TVs, PCs, gaming consoles, modem and laptops to the backyard shed. But the changes in the world around us have been equally dramatic.

Mobile Phones

In the Information Age - where governments rise and fall on characters - a decade is the equivalent of a geological age. When we began our experiment, my kids had never heard of Facebook, let alone Instagram or Snapchat. MySpace was their social platform of choice - as it was for every other teen on the planet - and IM-ing on MSN messenger was huge.

One Direction - Night Changes

I was the only person I knew, of any age, with an iPhone, and I literally wore my lime-green iPod mini around my neck on a string. The rules of our experiment were simple: No screen-based technology to be used in our home or in our car. Full stop. Anyone who needed to use the internet for school or work could do so at school or work. Many people have asked me how I got my kids, then aged 14, 15 and 18, to agree to such an outlandish plan.

The answer is twofold. And two - if you must know - I bribed them with cash. Quite a lot of it. But I made it clear that payday would only come at the end of the six months, and if and only if there had been no cheating and no mutinies. Slowly - and then all at once - my son swapped his 5 hours of gaming a day for 5 hours of saxophone practice a day. To say it was life-changing would be an understatement.

Today, aged 25, he performs and composes professionally. He'd be lost without his digital sound equipment, but remains a proud conscientious objector to social media. My eldest daughter, then at uni, is a journalist and a mum now - and is militant on the subject of screen-time for pre-schoolers.

Like all journalists, her career depends on being connected. She and her partner, also a musician, put their phones away after dinner and do jigsaw puzzles over a glass of wine. The baby of the family, who was a year-old Justin Bieber tragic when we started our experiment, is the mother of a four-month-old daughter and step-mum to a nine-year-old today.
