Hi Greg, do you see a 'return' button on your keypad when you switch to the numeric keypad? I know a few chat apps will have the 'return' key labelled as Enter, which sends the message, and you need to select the numeric keyboard to show a 'return' which enters a line break.

It may also be the particular keyboard you have as your default, but I suspect it is a selection made via the app in most 'chat type' apps, and the default is to 'enter' when on the alphabetic keyboard. Unfortunately, that would seem to only work on a physical keyboard and not the on-screen keyboard on my phone.
Nothing has worked. I have two options for the keyboard -- one with the top row of numbers, and one without. On either layout, the "return" button in the bottom right does the same thing -- sends the message. Just in Google Hangouts. I'm fearing that it's just a programming issue. Maybe will be resolved in the next Hangouts app update. One thing I have yet to try is to install a Google keyboard and try to set Hangouts to use that instead of the Samsung keyboard.

I aggree. This all happened after the Android Oreo update. Also Google no longer supports Hangouts so eventually it will be void and vanish.
